Legal Tip of the Month
Navigating Academic Dishonesty in the Age of AI
With the increasing use of artificial intelligence in academic settings, institutions are reevaluating how they define and enforce academic integrity. Students often assume that using AI tools like ChatGPT or Grammarly is harmless, but many colleges classify uncredited AI-generated work as plagiarism or unauthorized assistance.
Legal Insight: If a student is accused of academic dishonesty involving AI, due process protections still apply. This includes notice of the allegations, an opportunity to respond, and, in many cases, a hearing. Institutions must also clearly articulate their academic honesty policies—vague or retroactive enforcement of AI restrictions may violate a student’s rights.
Best Practice: Students should proactively ask professors or academic integrity offices about acceptable AI use and cite all assistance appropriately. Schools should revise their academic integrity codes to reflect modern realities while upholding fair, transparent enforcement processes. Students should seek help if accused of an academic violation.
Amie Baek Admitted to Federal Court Practice
Amie Baek Sworn In to U.S. Eastern Federal District Court
Congratulations to Amie Baek, who was recently sworn in to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District. This important milestone allows her to represent clients in federal legal matters and strengthens the firm’s ability to advocate across both state and federal courts. Admission to a federal district court is a significant credential that reflects an attorney’s professionalism, commitment to high standards, and readiness to handle complex litigation. We’re proud to celebrate this achievement and look forward to the expanded impact Amie will have in federal practice.
We successfully supported a family whose 6th-grade son, who has a 504 Plan for ADHD, was denied equitable access to an advanced math placement test offered only after school—when his medication is less effective. After advising the family through the initial testing process, we submitted a targeted advocacy letter citing 504 and ADA protections and requested a daytime retest. The district agreed, and the student retook and passed the test—securing his placement in the advanced math class.
When a student faced academic dismissal, they turned to K Altman Law for help. Our team uncovered key procedural flaws and policy violations, including the school’s failure to process timely disability accommodations. We argued that the student was denied a fair chance to succeed and advocated for their right to retake courses with proper support. As a result, the dismissal was overturned and failed grades were removed from their transcript, restoring their academic standing. This victory reflects our commitment to justice, educational equity, and empowering every student’s future.
