Families navigating the special education world face unique challenges in advocating fiercely for their student’s needs. Schools have a duty to educate their students, and special education is not about the disability — it’s about the student.
At K Altman Law, we do not approach these matters with an us-versus-them mentality. Instead, we strive to build, strengthen, and reinforce productive relationships between families and schools while ensuring that students receive the support and protections they are entitled to under the law.
I was fortunate to receive my education in a school district that truly listened to its community and to the parents of its students. After leaving that district, I became increasingly aware that not all school systems operate the same way.
Rather than pointing fingers or placing blame, I focus on understanding the full picture and identifying thoughtful, appropriate solutions for each unique circumstance. My goal is to support students and families through advocacy that is informed, collaborative, and grounded in respect for both educational institutions and individual needs.

Amie Baek is an Associate Attorney at K Altman Law with a strong focus on education law, student rights, and client advocacy. Prior to joining the firm as an attorney, she served as a Law Clerk at The Law Office of Keith Altman, where she worked extensively on education law matters.
Her experience included client intake for consultations, in-depth legal research, drafting complaints, and preparing pre-litigation demand letters. Known for her attention to detail and quality-focused approach, Amie managed complex tasks efficiently while maintaining a client-centered perspective.
Before entering the legal field, Amie worked as a Teaching Assistant for Exceptional Children in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. In this role, she supported students diagnosed with ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), assisting both academically and socially while working in alignment with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This hands-on experience continues to inform her legal advocacy and deepens her understanding of the real-world challenges faced by students and families.
