Student Denied Special Education Eligibility Ultimately Qualifies for an IEP

A West Coast family was concerned because their middle-school aged son was being repeatedly suspended and exhibiting self-harm in school. His parents had requested an evaluation for their son, but they were told he was “too smart” to need special education services. The family reached out to our firm and were assigned a 1:1 special education advocate to review their son’s situation. The advocate requested a meeting with the parents and the school team. At the meeting, the school team agreed to a comprehensive psycho-educational evaluation. The results of that testing showed that the child qualified for special education services under behavioral and emotional support. The advocate supported the family through the evaluation and IEP process to create an individualized program to meet the needs of the student now and for the future.
