Facing a College Investigation or Disciplinary Proceeding?
K Altman Law helps Georgetown students and families through conduct hearings, Title IX complaints, NIL disputes, and more.
Why Georgetown Students Come to Us
Georgetown handles student discipline differently than most schools. Academic integrity cases go to the university's Honor Council, a separate body from the Office of Student Conduct. Non-academic conduct matters go through a process of Educational Conferences and, if needed, an Administrative Conference decided by a single Decision Maker rather than a panel. Title IX and sexual misconduct complaints route to a third office entirely. Whatever issue brought you here, the same rule applies: the earlier you understand your options, the more of them you still have.
What Is Your Situation?
Academic & Conduct Misconduct
Accused of academic dishonesty or a Code of Student Conduct violation? Georgetown's Honor Council and Office of Student Conduct run separate processes, and the conduct process itself has no hearing panel, cases go through Educational or Administrative Conferences instead.
Title IX Complaints
Facing a Title IX complaint or investigation? Sexual misconduct allegations go through Georgetown's Title IX Office, on a separate track with its own procedures.
NIL Disputes
Dealing with an NIL dispute as a student-athlete? NIL deals, collective agreements, and compliance questions carry rules specific to your sport and conference.
Other Student Matters
Something else, like special education rights or a social media harm claim? If your issue doesn't fit neatly into the categories above, we still may be able to help.
What To Do in the Next 24 Hours
- Save documentation: Save any notice, email, or letter you received, and note every date in it.
- Identify the office: Identify which office is handling your matter (Office of Student Conduct, the Honor Council, or the Title IX Office).
- Pause responses: Don't respond in writing or agree to a Resolution Agreement before you talk to an advisor. Once you sign, you generally give up the right to appeal.
- Get counsel: Call for a free consultation before a decision gets made without you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a lawyer for a Georgetown conduct case?
You're not required to hire one. Georgetown's Code allows you to bring a Support Person to any meeting or conference. Note that a Support Person's role is limited: they can't speak or present on your behalf, so understanding the process yourself still matters.
How long does Georgetown's disciplinary process take?
There's no fixed deadline for the overall process, though a Respondent generally gets three business days after Notice to schedule an Educational Conference, and a written Outcome is typically issued within 15 business days after an Administrative Conference concludes.
What's the difference between an Educational Conference and an Administrative Conference?
An Educational Conference is an informal discussion aimed at resolving the matter by agreement. If no agreement is reached, or the case is more serious, it moves to an Administrative Conference, where a single Decision Maker reviews the evidence and decides responsibility. Georgetown does not use hearing panels for either.
Can a finding be appealed?
Yes, but the window is short: five business days from when the Outcome is sent. Appeals are limited to specific grounds, procedural error, new information, a disproportionate sanction, or a conflict of interest. Simply disagreeing with the outcome isn't a valid basis for appeal.
Will this show up on my transcript?
Only suspension and dismissal result in a permanent transcript notation under Georgetown's Code. Other sanctions are not noted on the transcript, but because outcomes vary by case, it's worth discussing directly.
Do Not Try to Handle Georgetown's Disciplinary Process On Your Own
Whether you are a student facing a conference or a parent trying to figure out what comes next, we can explain your options before the university makes decisions without your input.
