When a Scholarship Becomes Leverage: What Alex Cooper’s Story Reveals About Title IX Failures in College Athletics

Table of Contents

On June 10, 2025, Hulu premiered Call Her Alex, a new docuseries chronicling the life of Alex Cooper, host of the top-rated podcast “Call Her Daddy.” In the series, Cooper shared harrowing accounts of sexual harassment and intimidation by her former soccer coach at Boston University, Nancy Feldman. Among the allegations: unwelcome touching, inappropriate remarks, and leveraging her scholarship status as a tool of manipulation (CBS News Boston – June 10, 2025).

As a law firm focused on Title IX and student defense advocacy, we at K Altman Law are alarmed but not surprised. This story echoes those of countless students we’ve represented across the country.

Title IX: What It Should Protect

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits sex-based discrimination, including sexual harassment and assault, at any school receiving federal funding. It requires schools to investigate complaints promptly and protect students from retaliation. Unfortunately, many institutions—including those as prestigious as BU—fall short.

Why Institutional Response Matters

According to Cooper, Boston University did nothing after she submitted formal complaints to the athletics department. If true, this inaction constitutes a potential violation of Title IX. Universities are not just morally but also legally obligated to act when students report misconduct.

What You Can Do

If you or someone you know is experiencing harassment, it’s essential to:

  • Document every incident
  • Submit a formal complaint through your institution’s Title IX coordinator
  • Seek legal advice to understand your rights and potential recourse
