Webinar Recap

Adaptive Physical Education and Student Development Held on Oct 29

Our recent session explored innovative, adaptive strategies that help every student participate and thrive in physical education. From evidence-based methods to creative movement adaptations, we shared practical ways to make PE more inclusive for all learners – a must-read for educators, advocates, and families championing accessibility in schools.

In a civil rights case under 42 U.S.C. §1983, our team represented a plaintiff held in solitary confinement for over 80 days. After prevailing at trial, the defendant appealed, but through continued advocacy, we secured a favorable settlement while the appeal was pending, ensuring justice and resolution for our client.

In another case, we represented eight families in a federal lawsuit against a childcare center accused of physically and emotionally abusing at-risk children aged four and under. Through skilled mediation, our team secured an $800,000 settlement on behalf of the children. Both the guardian ad litem and the superior court judge commended the outcome, noting that it would not have been possible without K Altman Law’s expertise and advocacy.

Strategic Partnerships

Building What Students Deserve – Together

Partnering with K Altman Law means joining a nationwide movement dedicated to protecting students and empowering families. Our collaborative approach bridges law, education, and mental health, creating a network where advocates, educators, and professionals work together to ensure equitable access to education and due process for every learner.

Through these strategic partnerships, families gain access to comprehensive support — legal advocacy that secures rights, educational insight that drives progress, and emotional wellness resources that strengthen every outcome. For organizations, partnering with K Altman Law means aligning with a trusted legal ally who values transparency, shared mission, and meaningful impact.

This October, we strengthened connections that unite education, mental health, and legal professionals under one shared goal: advancing equity and access for all learners.

Expanding Access to Specialized Instruction

We’re working with innovative education providers to bridge service gaps for students with IEP and 504 plans, particularly in communities where specialized instruction or compensatory education can be difficult to obtain. By combining advocacy expertise with advancements in virtual learning, we’re making individualized education accessible to every learner, everywhere.

Advancing Cognitive and Academic Support

Our collaboration with professionals in educational psychology and structured literacy continues to deepen our ability to serve students holistically. Together, we connect families to evidence-based programs and interventions that reinforce progress, strengthen academic skills, and complement K Altman Law’s legal advocacy for fair and appropriate educational services.

Integrating Emotional Wellness into Advocacy

K Altman Law remains committed to addressing the intersection of mental health and education. Through partnerships with clinical and therapeutic professionals, we help families access the evaluations, documentation, and emotional support essential for strengthening IEPs, accommodations, and overall student well-being.

Building a Broader Network of Support

We continue to grow a national referral network that connects families with trusted legal and professional resources. These collaborations ensure that when challenges extend beyond education, students and parents have access to reliable, coordinated support — guiding them through every stage of their educational journey.

If your organization believes in empowering students and supporting families, we’d love to collaborate. Reach out to Teri Byrkit at [email protected] to schedule a meeting with members of the K Altman Law Team.

Core Services Reminder

At K Altman Law, we believe no student should face an education crisis alone. Whether your child is navigating an Individualized Education Program (IEP), facing a suspension or expulsion, or confronting a civil rights violation, our experienced team is here to guide, advocate, and fight on your behalf. We are a national law firm focused exclusively on Education Law, and our mission is simple: protect students and families through the most critical and complex challenges in education.

Our core services include

  • Student Defense Advocacy (K–12 & Higher Ed)
We represent students facing academic misconduct allegations, disciplinary proceedings, suspensions, dismissals, and Title IX investigations. Whether it’s a college student accused of cheating or a high school student at risk of expulsion, we ensure your student’s rights are protected and their future preserved.
  • Special Education Advocacy
We fight for students with disabilities to receive the services and accommodations they deserve under IDEA and Section 504. From IEP meetings to Due Process hearings, we are your voice when it matters most.
  • Civil Rights Litigation
Our team handles complex civil rights matters involving discrimination, retaliation, and systemic violations in schools. Whether you’re a student, parent, or educator, we bring aggressive litigation experience to bear when institutions fail to uphold their obligations.
  • Preventive Legal Consultations
Sometimes the best legal outcome is avoiding conflict altogether. We help families and institutions make informed decisions through strategic, forward-looking legal advice.

Special Education Advocacy Accomplishments

This month, the Special Education Advocacy Team achieved several important outcomes to support students and families. The team secured a crisis intervention and reintegration plan for a suspended student, arranged an interim educational placement for a student awaiting availability, and successfully advocated for 1:1 support addressing academic, social, emotional, communication, and safety needs.

Additionally, the team guided Manifestation Determination Review decisions toward non-punitive measures that promote student growth and supported families in obtaining comprehensive evaluation consents to ensure every student’s needs are fully and fairly assessed.

Attorneys for Education Rights – Washington State Bar Association

On October 31st, Attorney Keith Altman led an insightful session on Title IX protections for K–12 students, focusing on how families and advocates can ensure schools uphold their legal responsibilities. The discussion covered students’ right to a safe and nondiscriminatory learning environment, the right to prompt and effective responses to reports of sexual violence or harassment, and the right to participate fully in Title IX investigations and proceedings. The session offered valuable strategies for advocating effectively for student safety and equity in education.

I’m incredibly grateful to K Altman Law for representing me in a case against my former college. From start to finish, the team worked tirelessly on my behalf and made sure I felt supported every step of the way. Communication was consistent, professional, and always compassionate — I never felt like just another case.

While the outcome wasn’t perfect, I am genuinely content with how things turned out, and I know that’s largely because of the dedication and hard work of the K Altman team. Their guidance and commitment made a difficult process feel manageable, and I can’t thank them enough for helping me through such a stressful time. I truly appreciated all the help and personal attention they gave me. If you need strong, dependable legal support – especially for education-related matters – I highly recommend K Altman Law.
