From Title IX to NIL: Why Coordinated Advocacy Matters
As the school year closes, students, families, schools, and educational partners are facing a more complex risk environment in which one incident can trigger academic, disciplinary, disability, reputational, and eligibility consequences at the same time. That is especially true as schools continue operating under the reinstated 2020 Title IX framework, while also navigating increased scrutiny around disability accommodations and procedural fairness under Section 504. At the same time, disputes involving social media-related conduct, AI-based academic misconduct allegations (The San Francisco Standard), and rapidly evolving NIL opportunities are placing new pressure on students and institutions alike, particularly as NCAA eligibility rules continue to change.
For K Altman Law clients and partners, this matters because today’s student matters rarely fit into a single category. A disciplinary allegation may affect graduation, accommodations, athletics, future admissions, or professional opportunities. K Altman Law helps clients respond early, preserve rights, assess institutional exposure, and build coordinated strategies that address the full picture before one issue becomes several.
This month, the SPED team made significant strides in advancing supports and advocacy for students with disabilities, particularly those involved in the child welfare and foster care systems. The team collaborated on the development of practical guidance materials for caregivers, school staff, child welfare workers, and related service providers, focusing on identifying behavioral red flags, understanding key acronyms and processes, navigating Manifestation Determination Reviews (MDRs), and protecting the rights of students with disabilities.
The team also received meaningful positive feedback through a TAC testimonial from a parent who shared that guidance related to an IEP Amendment meeting helped her remain focused on compliance requirements and effectively advocate for her child’s needs. In direct advocacy work, the team successfully secured initial eligibility under Emotional Disability (ED), helped ensure the continuation of services and 1:1 transition support for a student in a self-contained classroom, and obtained agreement from a district for a safer, more appropriate private placement for a student whose prior placement raised serious safety concerns.
On the Student Defense side, with guidance from Student Defense Advisor Ms. Mindi Miller, a student facing dismissal, was successfully reinstated, preserving the student’s academic standing and ability to continue pursuing long-term educational goals.
Collaboration, Access, and Innovation in Strategic Partnerships
May continued the momentum in Strategic Partnerships, with growing collaboration across education, advocacy, and technology. Conversations with EdTech innovators in student wellness, reporting, and academic integrity are helping strengthen the connection between legal support and real-time student needs (Strategic Partnerships). We are also exploring emerging concerns around social media-related student harm and misconduct (Misuse of Texting and Social Media). For clients and partners, these efforts mean earlier support, stronger risk awareness, and more coordinated solutions before challenges escalate.

Educational Outreach & Family Engagement
K Altman Law team members continue to support families and organizations nationwide through educational presentations and advocacy-focused outreach. This month, Monica Garcia joined a national webinar alongside James Madison University’s Brad Barnett to provide guidance and practical insights to families navigating student support and educational planning.
The session drew attendees from across the country, including both parents and future college students, and generated exceptionally positive feedback for its approachable, informative discussion style. Organizers specifically highlighted Monica’s ability to connect with families and students alike while delivering meaningful, actionable information throughout the presentation.
