Federal Loan Guidance Update

New federal guidance urges schools to increase outreach on student loan repayment, with institutions at risk of losing aid eligibility if default rates remain high. Students should request clear repayment options, keep records, and respond early to all communications.

New Episode: K–12 Discipline

Our latest episode breaks down how school discipline works, including suspensions, expulsions, and student rights, with practical steps parents can take to navigate the process with clarity and confidence.

Expansion into NIL Representation

K Altman Law has expanded into Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) matters, representing student-athletes in contract disputes, eligibility issues, and compliance, including guidance following recent NCAA settlement changes.

New Federal Guidance Puts Schools on Notice

What Parents Should Know
The U.S. Department of Education recently issued guidance urging colleges and universities to strengthen default prevention efforts and conduct proactive outreach to borrowers who are delinquent or in default on federal student loans. Updated federal data reveal that over 1,800 institutions have nonpayment rates at or above 25 percent – and schools that fail to lower their cohort default rates risk losing access to Title IV federal student aid entirely.

This matters to students and families because institutions will now be reaching out more aggressively about loan repayment. While that outreach can be helpful, it must be clear, accurate, and respectful of student rights.

As K Altman Law Founder Keith Altman noted in a press release published this week: “Borrowers do not default because they want to – confusion and delay are usually the drivers. Schools can meet compliance expectations while still being humane: clear information, early outreach, and a real escalation path when a student is struggling.”

What you should do now: Ask your school for written repayment resources, request a clear options summary if you are delinquent, keep copies of all communications, and respond to notices early – always in writing.

K Altman Law Expands into the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) Space

  • The firm represents high school and college student-athletes in NIL contract disputes, eligibility challenges, payment disputes, compliance issues, and reputational matters such as defamation or social media misuse.
  • Following the House v. NCAA $2.8 billion settlement in June 2025, the firm expanded its athlete-facing services to include settlement eligibility review, Title IX and civil rights disputes related to pay equity, and guidance on new revenue-sharing contracts and income disclosures.
  • The NIL practice is a natural extension of the firm’s core Student Defense and Title IX work, given that NIL issues frequently intersect with student conduct proceedings, eligibility hearings, and institutional policy.

In February, K Altman Law’s special education team delivered meaningful results for students and families by securing both stronger protections and enhanced supports: the team successfully reduced a long-term suspension by half, attended an initial eligibility meeting to obtain eligibility under Specific Learning Disability (SLD) and to advocate for daily math, reading, and writing support, and obtained a 1:1 aide for a student’s first six weeks of middle school to ensure a stable transition while also increasing service minutes across the student’s programs, reflecting the firm’s focus on safeguarding student rights in discipline matters and securing appropriate special education services.
