Introducing Ed Rights Unplugged

When your child’s education feels uncertain – or a disciplinary or Title IX issue threatens a student’s future – what you need most is clarity, confidence, and a realistic path forward. That’s why K Altman Law launched Ed Rights Unplugged, our new podcast designed for families, students, and educators navigating high-stakes school and campus decisions.

This isn’t “legalese radio.” It’s plain-English, practical guidance from the attorneys and advocates who do this work every day – rooted in the real emotional “why” we see from clients: protecting a child’s dignity, preserving a student’s academic future, and finding stability when the system feels overwhelming.

Each episode breaks down what’s happening behind the scenes and what you can do next – what to document, what to ask for, what to avoid, and how to stay grounded when emotions run high. We’ll cover Special Education (IEP/504), Student Defense, and Title IX/campus conduct, using a mix of short “unplugged” explainers, expert interviews, and scenario-based episodes with scripts you can actually use.

Listen to our first episode here. Watch our website, social channels, and the newsletter each month for new episodes of Ed Rights Unplugged.

The Student Defense Team recently secured a not responsible finding for a student in a Title IX matter after a lengthy and complex process. Additionally, our advocacy has helped multiple students facing dismissal remain enrolled and continue their education. We remain committed to protecting students’ rights and academic futures.

Our Special Education team achieved meaningful outcomes for students while driving systemic improvements. We successfully re-opened a prior eligibility determination from last spring, securing eligibility under Emotional Disability, Other Health Impairment, and Specific Learning Disability. This work led to the development of a strong, student-centered IEP and safety plan and enabled the student to transition from homebound instruction back to in-person schooling.

In another matter, we obtained an appropriate private therapeutic placement for a student whose needs could not be met in the current setting, ensuring access to the specialized supports required for educational progress.

Beyond individual cases, our advocacy resulted in a significant systemic change: district-wide diabetic care training, delivered in partnership with the American Diabetes Association. This initiative strengthens student safety and compliance across the entire district and reflects our commitment to sustainable, long-term impact.

K Altman Law is expanding strategic partnerships with immigration law firms to better support international students facing academic misconduct, disciplinary proceedings, or Title IX-related allegations – situations that can carry visa and status implications. While our team focuses on the school or campus process, these partner firms advise on immigration-specific risk, timing, documentation, and status-preservation strategies so students can make informed decisions without guessing. The goal is coordinated, compliant support: tighter issue-spotting at intake, clearer client guidance on when to consult immigration counsel, and faster referrals when immigration exposure is possible.

When Your College Student is Accused

An overview of the earliest and most critical decisions families make after a disciplinary allegation and how missteps can permanently harm a student’s case.

ACCOSTED: Truth Delayed = Justice Denied

We’re pleased to share that Keith Altman will be featured on ACCOSTED: Truth Delayed = Justice Denied for a brief, host-led Q&A discussing “pressure campaigns” sometimes used to intimidate or discredit survivors, journalists, and investigators in high-profile matters. Keith will focus on practical, plain-English guidance – how to recognize common red flags, document concerning conduct, reduce exposure, and route communications safely – while staying within clear legal and ethical boundaries. He’ll discuss patterns and safeguards, not specific individuals. We’ll share listening details once the episode is released.

Core Services Reminder

When something goes sideways at school or on campus, most families feel the same mix of emotions: fear, urgency, and constant second-guessing about what to do next. K Altman Law helps turn that chaos into a plan. We support students and families in Student Defense matters (discipline, academic integrity, dismissals), Special Education disputes (IEP/504 services, placement, implementation), Title IX/campus conduct cases, and Civil Rights litigation when discrimination, retaliation, or denial of access crosses the line into legal claims. Our role is to help you be heard, protect your options, and avoid missteps that worsen outcomes – while staying focused on what you’re trying to preserve: stability, momentum, and future opportunities.

Bullying Advocacy

K Altman Law also works with parents to help them understand how to properly and effectively advocate for their child in bullying matters.

K Altman Law helped our family SO much in getting an IEP set up in our district for my child. Having been at private school, I knew nothing about the whole IEP process (why to do it, when to do it, how to get it done) and our attorney, Sarah Lhotak walked us through all of it and was there to make sure we understood everything (the laws, what was good for my child, what the schools were and weren’t able to provide). She attended meetings with me and was able to give me feedback and guidance in all of my contacts with the school system. The whole process is daunting and I’ve known lots of parents who spend all their time battling with their schools and not getting the accommodations their children need, Sarah made this process straightforward and relatively easy–and gave me the heads’ up about what to expect in every circumstance. Our family may have many, many more hurdles in this whole process as my child grows, but it’s good to know I have someone to call if I need additional help, that I don’t have to get a law degree myself or a crash course in special ed just to help my kiddo get through school, I can just call K Altman Law and let them take the confusion and guesswork out of it for me.
